Anne of Green Gables has been in continuous print since 1908. It has sold over 50 million copies. Canada declared Anne Shirley an honorary citizen. The novel is so identified with Prince Edward Island that it has become the basis of the island's tourism industry.

What Anne of Green Gables Is About
Matthew Cuthbert, a shy farmer on Prince Edward Island, and his stern sister Marilla intend to adopt an orphan boy to help with farm work. A mistake at the orphanage sends them Anne Shirley — eleven years old, red-haired, freckled, talkative to a degree that unnerves Matthew immediately, and possessed of an imagination so active that she names ponds, trees, and road-corners and becomes genuinely attached to them.
The novel follows Anne's first years at Green Gables. She makes a best friend (Diana Barry), a fierce rival turned eventual love interest (Gilbert Blythe), an enemy (the teacher she accidentally insults), and a hundred smaller relationships with the Avonlea community. She makes spectacular mistakes — dyeing her hair green, accidentally getting Diana drunk, losing her temper with the woman who criticises her appearance — and apologises for them with complete sincerity and no diminishment of the quality that caused them.
What Montgomery is doing, across 38 chapters, is demonstrating that Anne's unconventional qualities — her imagination, her verbosity, her intensity — are not problems to be solved. They are what makes her valuable.
